Ash Walsh Infant School are Ash safety winnters
Ash Walsh Infant School has won the Ash Schools’ Safety Award presented to them by Guildford Borough Council’s Cllr David Wright and Cllr Pat Scott.
Mrs Cawson, Headteacher of Ash Walsh Infant School, said: “We are delighted to have won this years safety quiz. The children have learnt a great deal about safety and thoroughly enjoyed participating.”
The annual event is organised by the Safer Guildford Partnership’s Neighbourhood Teams in Ash, and uses local agencies in a series of talks held in the classroom to teach Year 2 primary school children all about different aspects of personal safety.
Speakers covered a range of safety aspects including handy safety tips and information relating to: fire, roads, first aid, water, stranger danger, and rail tracks, before culminating in an inter-school safety quiz to test the pupil’s skills on listening and retaining knowledge.
Lesley Telford-Gillies, Community Safety Warden for Ash Parish said, “First of all, congratulations to Ash Walsh Infant School for being the winners of 2008 Ash School Safety Quiz! A fantastic fun afternoon was had by all the schools and the teams taking part, all did really well. It was a very close result and they were all winners in our eyes!”
Ash Walsh Infant School pipped their local rival schools to the post by gaining an impressive 13 points after winning the tie-breaker question with their neighbouring school, St. Paul’s C of E Infant School, who finished in second place with a very respectable score.
Jo Packman, fellow Community Safety Warden for Ash Parish added: “We were really pleased that so many agencies took part in the quiz. And it is so important for the children to remember to have fun, but stay safe, especially with the school holidays coming up.”
She added: “I was really impressed with how well they all did - they were so enthusiastic. And it was lovely, albeit a little embarrassing, when they finished the ceremony by singing ‘happy birthday’ to me!”
The other schools taking part were: Shawfield School, Holly Lodge and Ash Grange who all finished with12 points, but in the end Ash Walsh Infant School showed that they are the community safety champions this year.
