St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School prove to be safety winners
28 Jul 2008

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School has won the Guildford Schools’ Safety Award presented to them by, Councillor Melanie Wilberforce.

Mr Phillips, Headteacher of St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School said: “We are delighted to have won this years’ safety quiz.  The children have learnt a great deal about safety and thoroughly enjoyed participating.”

This was the first quiz event organised by the Safer Guildford Partnership’s Neighbourhood Teams in Guildford.  It used local agencies in a series of talks held in the classroom to teach Year 2 primary school children all about different aspects of personal safety.

Speakers covered a range of safety aspects including handy safety tips and information relating to: fire safety (by Charlie Kemp of Surrey Fire and Rescue), road safety, first aid (by Sally Ann–Nelson, St John’s Ambulance), water, stranger danger sessions (by Community Safety Wardens and PCSO’s), rail tracks, before culminating in an inter-school safety quiz to test the pupil’s skills on listening and retaining knowledge.

Tracy James, Community Safety Warden for Westborough and Onslow said: “The children were impeccably behaved and the grand final was held at Weyfield School on 9th July.

She added:  “Richard Musgrove and I are both very proud to be the local community safety wardens for Westborough and Onslow and look forward to supporting Year 2 safety lessons, alongside our local partners next year.  A huge thank you goes out to all the teacher and school support throughout who worked so hard to help children remember to have fun, but stay safe, especially with the school holidays coming up.”

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School pipped their local rival schools to the post with a very impressive 15 points.  The three other participating schools came joint second in a very exciting tie-break where Guildford Grove, Merrow Infants and Weyfield Schools all won 14 points each.

Richard Musgrove, Community Safety Warden for Westborough & Onslow, commended all the pupils by saying: “I was really impressed with how well they all did - they were so enthusiastic.”
