Find out who will be this year’s school safety champions
Children across Guildford are busy testing their knowledge on all things relating to safety in the hope they will be this year’s school safety champions. The winning team will be presented with a prestigious shield by the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Pauline Searle and Cllr David Wright, Lead member for Community Safety on Thursday 2 July.
Six teams entered the competition from St. Joseph’s School Westborough , Guildford Grove School, Weyfield School, St Nicholas School, Merrow Infants School and Stoughton Infants School and each member of the quiz team will receive a medal from the Mayor with the winning team taking away the schools quiz shield, all the children that take part will also receive a certificate.
Garry Jones, Community Safety Warden for Stoke said: “Such an event is an excellent opportunity for the community safety team to engage with these young people and try and help ensure that they have fun out of school but stay safe too.
He added: “This has been another excellent opportunity to work alongside our partners and by covering ‘safety’ from all aspects and angles, really strengthens the ‘stay safe’ message.”
The annual event is organised by the Safer Guildford Partnership’s Neighbourhood Teams who work with local agencies to give a series of personal safety talks to Year 2 primary school children.
This year Guildford Borough Community Safety Wardens, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey Police, St John’s Ambulance Service, and British Transport Police have delivered the ‘stay safe’ message to more than 300 young children and staff covering safety aspects and handy safety tips relating to: fire, roads, personal safety and first aid, water, stranger danger, and rail tracks, before culminating in an inter-school safety quiz to test the pupil’s skills on listening and retaining knowledge.
Each school nominated six children to represent the school and the rest of the school children participated in the audience or became cheer leaders.
