Don’t suffer in silence - Speak out with the help of domestic abuse awareness week

1 in 4 women in Surrey have suffered domestic abuse from a male partner, and the Safer Guildford Partnership is committed to tackling domestic abuse by supporting victims.

Domestic abuse is often portrayed as physical violence in the home, but in reality abuse can also be emotional, psychological or sexual, occurs irrespective of gender, class and age, and takes place in the context of a family relationship, or between partners or ex-partners. It can also include a wide range of bullying and abusive behaviours such as isolation, constant criticism and many others.
The different forms of abuse can distort the victims sense of reality, so that they convince themselves that the behaviour is acceptable, that it is their fault, and that there is no way out of the situation.

Reinforcing the fact that tackling domestic abuse is a top priority for the area, Pauline, an outreach worker at ‘Chapter 1’, the provider for domestic abuse support in Waverley and Guildford said: “Victims, male and female, need support from someone they can trust who will listen to them in confidence, and without judgement.
And added: “We are here to give practical advice, help and real support to victims of abuse. We want people to know that they don’t have to suffer in silence, they can pick up the phone and talk to us. We are available Mondays to Saturdays, and can be reached by telephone on 01483 577 392.

The Outreach service offers anything from a one off opportunity to talk confidentially, to longer term ongoing support and assistance. They can also offer help and advice in dealing with other agencies to help get the services or information needed. They can offer help in talking to the police, legal services, housing or benefits agencies etc, according to the wishes and needs of the caller. The number to ring in Guildford and Waverley is 01483 577392.

On average, a woman will be assaulted by her partner or ex-partner 35 times before reporting the abuse, and domestic abuse is a factor in a quarter of all suicide attempts by women.

Domestic abuse can devastate families and lead to tragic deaths. It is really important that people know that local services are available to offer information and support for people affected. Too many people suffer in silence.

If you are suffering domestic abuse, or know someone that is being abused, you can access this service by calling 01483 577392. All calls are treated in confidence and victims will be dealt with sympathetically.
