Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, on Thursday 26 November at 8pm

“In Europe we delude ourselves that female emancipation is a done thing; that women have acquired autonomy and respect in the communities where they live. You only have to go a few hundred kilometers away to find that the conditions of women are still catastrophic and based on ignorance and violence.” Dacia Maraini

‘Hurried Steps’ is directed by Nicolette Kay and produced by New Shoes Theatre in association with Amnesty International. The play is part of a series of local events to mark National Domestic Violence Awareness Week.

‘Hurried Steps’ is the translation of the Italian play ‘Passi Affrettati’ which is currently touring in Italy, France and Spain to great acclaim. The play was inspired by research from Amnesty International and tells the stories of eight individuals’ moving experiences. The New Shoes Theatre ensemble includes accomplished actors such as Charlotte Lucas who is known as Selena Geeson in ITV’s ‘Bad Girls.’

The performance will be followed by a discussion panel to enable the audience to question issues raised in the play.

Dacia Maraini is a renowned Italian playwright, novelist, poet and journalist, who has spent her career addressing women’s issues.

The director, Nicolette Kay, is known for her work with the arts company Muzikansky which produced plays for fifteen years and ran film nights at the band venue, The Forum in Tunbridge Wells. She also ran film and drama workshops for young people, whose work has been screened at international film festivals.
