Spirit of Christmas lights up Guildford
Looking for the perfect festive start to your Christmas? Then join Prince Charming - TV presenter Gethin Jones - and stars of the Yvonne Arnaud pantomime to celebrate a traditional Guildford Christmas on Thursday 19 November. The Christmas lights switch-on from the Guildhall balcony marks the start of the festive season and late night shopping in the countdown to Christmas.
Organised by Guildford Borough Council in partnership with the Town Centre Management Group and other local partners, residents and visitors can celebrate in style as the magic of Christmas comes to Guildford.
Cllr Pauline Searle, Mayor of Guildford who will switch on the lights says: "Why not join us for the biggest festive celebration in the area and start your Christmas here in Guildford. There will be entertainment for all the family so come and join in the fun!"
A host of traditional Christmas activities and events will be available from 1.30pm on the day in the town centre including:
- Music from The Guildford Friary Band, The Guildford VOX Community Choir, the Salvation Army and BBC Last Choir Standing finalists, The Academy of Contemporary Music’s Gospel Choir
- buskers, novelty stalls and a traditional carousel
- a craft market on the town bridge, for that unique gift idea
- visits by Father Christmas in the High Street and the opening of Santa’s grotto at Debenhams
- a festive Newfoundland dogs display outside Debenhams and in the High Street.
From 7pm join Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Pauline Searle, Gethin Jones and 96.4 Eagle Radio’s Peter Gordon as they light up the town from the Guildhall balcony. This will be followed by a spectacular fireworks finale provided by White Lion Walk.
The evening doesn’t stop there with many stores staying open until 8pm, hosting exclusive Christmas offers and promotions. Plus, The Salvation Army will be playing popular Christmas tunes outside Marks and Spencer from 7.30pm.
