What have we acheived?

Here are some objectives the project groups have acheived.

Safer Neighbourhoods:

  • An increase in police presence in every ward across the borough.
  • Significant reduction in graffiti, litter and abandoned vehicles.
  • Increase in the number of Community Clean-up days.
  • The introduction of Neighbourhood Panel ‘Have Your Say’ meetings in every ward.
  • 12 Anti-Social Behaviour Orders issued.
  • A Youth Awareness Programme to work with young people.
  • 62 new Neighbourhood Watch schemes since 2002.
  • Increase in provision for young people, including the Tongham Ash and Normandy (TANY) mobile bus project.

Safer Town Centre:

  • Reduction in the number of street drinkers in the town centre
  • New by-law to crack down on urinating in the street.
  • A sophisticated CCTV network now covers the whole of the town centre.
  • Guildford has been awarded the British Retail Consortium’s Safer Shopping Award.
  • Campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of binge drinking.

Crime Reduction:

  • Vehicle crime is significantly below the national average, and has fallen steadily over the past 3 years.
  • Incidents of burglary are significantly below the national average.
  • All police staff and Community Safety Wardens now carry ultra violet key rings to assist in tracking down ‘property marked’ stolen items.
  • Targeted work with vulnerable groups, such as the elderly.
  • An increase in community ‘property marking’ days means many local residents have marked their valuables against crime.
  • 15 Auto Crime Reduction Road Shows have been carried out across the borough.

Safer Transportation:

  • 3.5% reduction in the number of killed and seriously injured within the borough over the last two years
  • More police speed enforcement equipment is now in use
  • Regular campaigns to raise awareness of the seriousness of drink-driving
  • Trial of a new Nightrider bus service to safely deliver people home from the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights
  • Purchase of four vehicle activated speeding signs

Substance Misuse:

  • Reduction in the number of drug-related deaths.
  • Increase in the number of police arrests of Class A drug suppliers.
  • Reduction in the number of street drinkers.
  • Drugs education is now delivered to all schools within the borough.
  • Successful pilot scheme providing support to users of crack cocaine.
  • Awareness-raising poster campaign providing information about the legal status of cannabis.

Domestic Abuse:

  • New domestic abuse outreach service providing support to people suffering abuse in Guildford Borough.
  • An average of 13 new referrals contact this service each month, from both men and women.
  • We have achieved an increase in reporting of domestic abuse cases by promoting the unacceptability of domestic abuse and providing more information about support available.
  • Wide-spread campaign to raise awareness of the new service.
